Freyburg relies on SPR-EX spiral-wound pipe technology

In Freyburg/Unstrut, the innovative SPR EX wound-pipe technology from Swietelsky-Faber GmbH was used for an efficient and sustainable solution with minimal disruption to ongoing wastewater treatment plant operations.

On the site of the Freyburg/Unstrut wastewater treatment plant, one of the main wastewater inflows was badly damaged and showed leaks. The concrete channel (diameter DN 600) leads directly into an influent pumping station and was also located at a depth of more than five metres, which made access difficult. “Given the limited accessibility and the parallel renewal measures at the wastewater treatment plant, the decision was made in favour of our innovative SPR EX process,” explains Thomas Hohrein, Senior Site Manager of the Leipzig branch of Swietelsky-Faber GmbH.

Reasons for choosing the process

The SPR EX process was selected because of its numerous advantages:

Minimal intervention: No excavation work was necessary, which was particularly advantageous in the deep and sensitive areas. The wound-pipe profile was installed via the existing inflow structure.

Adaptability: Thanks to its independent system setup, the process is ideal for hard-to-access areas.
Speed: The process is fast, and with minimal disruption to wastewater treatment plant operations the wound pipe could be installed. Often a temporary reduction in the inflow of wastewater is sufficient, so that elaborate interim drainage can be dispensed with.

Durability and rehabilitation result: PVC profile strips offer high resistance to chemical and mechanical influences and extend the service life of the rehabilitated channel. The pipe geometry was restored.

Implementation of the rehabilitation

The SPR EX process is based on winding and inserting a PVC profile strip. After positioning the winding machine in the launch shaft, the PVC profile strip was continuously fed in with a pull wire and sealing compound. The winding machine then forms the liner. The pull wire is then used to expand it against the wall of the existing pipe by pulling out the liner. The result is a sealed new pipe. This pipe was connected to the existing manhole structure, and the previously surveyed connections are opened with a robot and integrated by means of a hat-profile system.

The functionality of the channel system was restored without any significant interruption to the wastewater treatment plant. “The SPR EX process proved to be the ideal solution for rehabilitating the DN 600 concrete channel at the Freyburg wastewater treatment plant site. Thanks to the fast and efficient implementation, operational interruptions could be minimized and the functionality of the channel sustainably improved,” concludes senior site manager Thomas Hohrein.
